ucl-logoUCL is ranked 4th in the world in the 2013 QS World University Rankings of universities. UCL receives the highest share of any UK university of the UK Government’s investment fund. UCL is also one of the leading recipients of EC funds, and is currently participating in 240 Framework Programme 7 projects, with a total European Union funding contribution of approximately €127.4m. UCL is currently investing £350 million in state-of-the-art infrastructure, facilitating cutting edge research across a broad range of disciplines. In 2011, UCL reported an annual income of £284.3 million for research grants and contracts.

UCL is a multi-faculty university with strengths across the board in science, medicine, engineering, social science and in arts and humanities. The research strategy of UCL is oriented around a number of grand challenges explored by departments but also by interdisciplinary research centres. Among these centres are a number with focus areas strongly related to those of aspects of the complexity science to a global system science, such as security, finance, machine learning, software engineering, human-computer interaction, energy, environment, transport and migration. UCL also plays host to several Complexity Science research groups. The Centre of Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) is an interdisciplinary department with an international reputation for research into spatial phenomena. In addition, the Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology (CoMPLEX) tackles challenges arising from problems in biological complexity. The SECReT Centre for Security and Crime Science. UCL also hosts the Slade School of Art. Contained within these centres are some of the world’s leading experts covering arrange of academic disciplines.

UCL is in the heart of London and closely linked to many other institutions, including some relevant to GSS, namely Oxford, the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and tropical medicine.
